Event Details


This year’s conference will explore the naming and charting of the South Pacific, Indian and Southern oceans, and will acknowledge the bicentenary of the publication of the first complete map of Australia by cartographer, Louis de Freycinet in 1811.

 a presentation by Frederick Muller on ‘The first map documenting Magellan’s sighting of the Southland and sailing of the Pacific: Fries’ Tabula moderna alterius hemispherius, 1525‘ . Tha map will be ondisplay the Library from Thursday 20 May to Wednesday 25 May.

Friday 27 May
Afternoon: a map collection management workshop for curators and librarians.
The workshop will explain the general concepts and terminology used in the online delivery of map collections and will run though a staged model of spatially based map delivery. With reference to on-line examples it will examine each of the major options for implementation and discusses requirements such as tools, expertise and cost. The techniques and issues of using online maps in mashups will also be discussed using examples. The emphasis of the workshop will be on free and low-cost tools and no pervious knowledge will be assumed. The workshop will be presented by members of the Spatial Sciences Innovation Unit at the University of Sydney.

Conference venue
The conference venue is the Dixson Room, Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW, Macquarie Street, Sydney.
Throughout the conference the Library’s rich collections will be featured including an exhibition of the 1811 Freycinet and 1814 Flinders’ maps of Australia. Welcome drinks will be held in the Friends Room, the original Mitchell Library Reading Room, opened in 1910.

Conference Accommodation

Attendees are responsible for booking their hotel accommodation and payment of their account. A selective list of  Sydney Accommodation within a ten minute walk of the conference venue is available.

Conference fee
The registration fee of $350 covers attendance at all conference sessions including Welcom drinks,lunch, morning and afternoon teas and the Behind the scenes tours on Friday morning. This year the conference dinner is included in the full price of Registration. The dinner will include a presentation by Paul Brunton, Senior Curator, Mitchell Library, on one of his favourite areas of expertise, the Charting of the Pacific.
Day registrants wishing to attend should ensure they add a  ‘Conference dinner’ ticket to their registration.

The Provisional program for Southern Latitudes, the annual ANZMapS conference is now available. Attendees can register early at the Welcome drinks on Tuesday 24 May. The Tasman  map presented to the Mitchell Library by the Princess George of Greece in 1931 will be on display for the evening.
